Strong female leads

I’ve been congratulated before by readers on my decent female characters. I don’t think I’m that brilliant. I tend not to think about it. I just write people I consider fun, funny, and adventerous.

A fan-favourite is LUCY, the superintelligent afterlife machine from WHO BUILT THE HUMANS? who takes it upon herself to drag us screaming back from oblivion.

Someone in a workshop once asked me how I managed to write decent female characters. I said “I write people”.

I write a person and then she becomes female. The sex of a character often comes to me a few moments after the plot. Stephanie arrived almost fully formed however, and her first appearance was in a 100-word story where she died and immediately insulted the computer in charge of reality.

She hasn’t changed much.
