Three of my best Substack stories
in case you missed them
I’ve been on Substack for a while now, and much like the early Earth, there wasn’t much life here until last year, when a lot of humans turned up.
Hello humans.
I am also a human like you. I enjoy human hobbies like reading the television and drinking sunlight. Because I am a human, I know that sometimes we miss out on things because time travel doesn’t suit our biology*.
*Yes, that’s a spoiler for another book, but we won’t get into that today.
Most people who are here now were not here for most of my stories, so I thought I would repost them with a brief synopsis above each one. That way, you can find a story that appeals to you whilst I am working hard on project 09082023.
I’ve changed the pub date of some of them so they show up on the main page too.
Story 1 - Tardigrade
Originally published in October last year, Tardigrade is a short story about Stephen Hawking’s very real 2009 party for time travellers. It came about because I wanted to write some humorous fan-fiction about a man I admire, without violating the truth of what actually happened on that summer evening in 2009. So, this Science Fiction comedian had a question to work on: How could a time traveller show up and not be noticed by one of the world’s smartest humans?
The answer was surprisingly simple.
My time traveller would be very small.
Tardigrade - A short story
This short story is much-loved by physicists I have thrown it at, and will be featured not only in SEVEN STORIES ABOUT TIME TRAVEL but WHO BUILT THE HUMANS 2 as well.
Story 2 - Whale
Whale is a medium-length story about a distant future in which the fossil of a Human astronaut is traded between weird alien cultures. It has talking frogs obsessed with 1980s music, warlike bipedal cats who live in ventilation shafts, and a mysterious museum race known only as THEM, who sometimes collect their visitors and store them in vast museum planets.
The fossil passes through these alien hands as evidence of the increasingly obscure Human species, a treasure that many would kill to possess. In the end the fossil meets an unusual fate, one which my readers got to vote on. Luckily, the majority voted for the ending I had already drafted up.
Short Story - WHALE - Part 1
Galina Agafonov had been dead for over a million years before they found her fossil, cold and broken, floating out in space.
Story 3 - The Stephanie Glitch
The last one is the big one. The Stephanie Glitch is a novel about a psychic teenager who discovers her powers when her nightmares start to come true. Reality is collapsing, and this fledgling clairvoyant has just caught a glimpse of a starship in another universe.
Her goal now is to get there before the roof of her own world falls down upon her.
It’s big, it’s weird, it’s mindbending. This is my favourite book.
