You get WHO BUILT THE HUMANS? for free if you open this email.
And you can share this message with friends too.
EDIT: Sent this email out a bit early, but the book is now free on all platforms (apart from Amazon, who don’t let you make free book days if your book is available elsewhere).
You remember WHO BUILT THE HUMANS? right? My novel-length collection of 11 Sci-Fi and Comedy universes, bridged by 47 stories that can be read in any order? The book that marketing people told me I should split into 11 individual books, so I could quickly establish myself as an author and make more money?
The novelthology designed for people with busy lives, with each chapter meticulously placed so it can be read in almost any order and present new ideas and atmospheres each time?
The book I designed so people could read it on train journeys, put it down for months, and pick it up again without feeling lost?
The big book you can read at your own pace. The one with a unique structure that no other book follows. The one a reader once described as “ADHD friendly Science Fiction”?
The delirious mix of existentialist Sci-Fi and surreal comedy?
Well, it’s here, and today it is 100% free.
Why?
Because I am celebrating a big change in my life as an author.
I have finally left Amazon’s exclusivity agreement, meaning WBTH is now available in lots of other places for all my new readers. Apple, Kobo, Smashwords, you name it, it’s probably there. Amazon was great in the beginning
And it’s still on Kindle, but Amazon won’t let authors do free days unless we don’t put our eBooks anywhere else. This works for small authors in the beginning as you don’t need to be anywhere else, but now I’ve got more readers and interest from bookstores, I wanted to scale up.
So the book is free this week everywhere, apart from Amazon, where I can never make it free again. (I may make other books Kindle exclusive, but not WBTH).
And I know how hard buying luxury items is right now.
And this book is a luxury item. Forty seven stories stretching across eleven distinct microcosms of weird, each forming thematic or structural links to the next and the previous. That’s a luxury if ever I’ve seen one. So whilst I’ve used my momentum to fly away from Amazon exclusivity, that means I can now make the eBook free for people who get their books elsewhere.
Just to put the form of this smooth machine of words into perspective, I added four months to the development time so I could perfect the way the stories interacted, re-ordering them countless times and re-reading the book over and over in multiple directions, so I knew it would work for every eventuality.
This is a book that hasn’t been done before, and won’t be done again, because even if WBTH2 is on the way, WBTH2 is a twisting and reinvention of the form, not a copy. If it was going to be more of the same, I wouldn’t have bothered.
So, WBTH1 is free because I want you to get hold of it.
And maybe write a review.
Fine. I admit it, okay? I have an ulterior motive.
I am again grasping at some hard-to-get book promotion services, and I need my book to look a bit more popular before applying.
Best way to look popular? Don’t fake it. Actually become popular.
Thanks to all the positive reviews I’ve got so far, I think WBTH is more than good enough to deserve a few more sales, and I want to boost it again in a big way before I announce WBTH2 pre-orders in the next few weeks.
One of the main ways readers decide which books to buy is by reading the reviews. So, if you’re the reviewing type, please consider reviewing WHO BUILT THE HUMANS? after you’ve read it.
If you’re not the reviewing type, I don’t mind. I want you to have the book.
Once you’ve clicked, the link to the free eBook should be pretty easy to find. It is called “WBTH - FREE WEEK!!!” and will take you to every single online retailer which stocks WBTH.
I’m hoping to get lots of downloads this week in the run-up to my Fringe show, so any sharing of this post is greatly appreciated.
Extra stuff
On the very same linktree, you will also see tickets to my Manchester Fringe (UK) show PHILLIP CARTER’S AWKWARD RE-ENTRY. It’s a standup comedy show inspired by WBTH, which I suppose makes it something of a soft relaunch. If you live nearby, come say hi, I’m weirder in person.
This promotion marks the start of a new chapter in my author life. I have left the exclusivity of Amazon and published the WBTH eBook on almost every other book distributor on the planet. It wasn’t easy, but it’s done.
What this means is that WBTH won’t ever be free on Amazon again, but it will be free everywhere else. The link above takes you to everywhere else. Kobo, Apple, Smashwords, you name it, it’s probably there.
If you’re not subscribed to THE WEIRD WORLDS OF PHILLIP CARTER, you should be. I post regular Sci-Fi stories, Comedy, and discounted books. You will find short stories, novels, and podcast episodes here.
End
Oh, and in case it was not abundantly clear, I don’t use “AI” in my posts. I don’t need to. I write faster than it, I write funnier than it, and at its present state it is little more than a word vomit machine. Its prose is far too sweet, far too markety. It is evident in the architecture of each “AI” expulsion that it is a maker of averages, a blandness machine, a lanwmower for the delicate stems of all human literature. It is not true AI in that it is not at all intelligent.
For that reason it has no edge, no angle, no surface to hold onto.
To describe it without using my knowledge of writing, I would say it had no soul.
So no, no robot blandness here.
But a book about robots might be on its way soon…
You’ll find out about it soon. If you’ve been here a while, you may have even seen the first glimpses of this new book without noticing…
The book links were set at $3.99 on each one...so not free. And Kindle was $3.71. At least you were not one of those authors that post free books and switchbait to Kindle Unlimited for the free.
I love everything about this post 😆👏 Give me all the strange!
