I really wasn't sure if it got the balance of existential scifi and comedy right, and you've gotten rid of that fear.
I liked ending the story here because those open questions generate a lot of thinking, and I think that's the high point of the story as well. Beyond that I thought it might get less interesting to have an answer, so I wanted to leave it open to the reader.
Though in my mind, she gets out and breaks up with him. Writing that would have turned it back round to comedy, which I didn't want to end on. If I were to imagine it like a TV series (I do intend to pitch to Netflix soon) I would put the healing process in as a montage, which is hard to do on the page.
Does it have a battery? That's a brilliant question. At first I thought about tamagotchis, how you can turn a game off and it remembers what you were doing when you last played. Philosophically, would that be considered a death for her?
Then I had thought it was a crystal-based thing, so if the battery dies she essentially just pauses, and can be revived pretty easily. Though this is a bit more high-tech than the near-future world I put her in. I thought she'll get into the right mindset, align with the chemicals in her biological brain, and leap back in. But there is a weirder, deeper question that arises with that, which I'll tackle in a future story: What if the body wakes up?
