At 5pm tonight (UK time) my mindbending interview with John Coon will be live in a new, polished, edited format. All thanks to my technician friend Sejul Nerve.
In it, I talk to Sci-Fi author and Journalist John Coon about the intersection of his day job and his art, how he writes such catchy titles, punchy lines, and engaging characters. And we delve into his double bookbub deal too.
Basically, if you’re even slightly into sci-fi, want some good writing advice for free, and have an hour to spare, on the green ‘watch now’ button at the end of this newsletter.
But before I go, I wanted to tell you all that the podcast is ‘blowing up’ as social media influenzas (typo intentional) might say. I have an increasingly varied set of guests lined up, from professional scriptwriters to actors, editors, and other creatives. I’m finally doing the thing I set out to do way back in 2013, I’m bringing creative people together.
It’s shaping up to be a great talk show.
What you might not know is that each guest gets a preamble at the moment. This is an unrecorded, 1 to 2 hour chat where I work out what questions are best for the guest. It’s a lot of fun, and it usually happens on Discord or Zoom.
People have asked how to support the podcast, and how to get into these preambles, so I’m refurbishing my Patreon page so it can be used as a place for the live studio audience. Tonight I am working on Patreon to Discord integrations to facilitate this audience. I’ll be adding a tier for people who want to ask their own questions too, as I expect fans of my guests would want to come and say hi. It’s a technical challenge, but I think it will be worth it!
If a guest has to be on Zoom, the preamble will be arranged via invites through the Patreon, so it should all work out fine!
Some of you will have noticed I played around with a paid tier here for behind-the-scenes content for my own short stories. I may still keep that as Substack is better for text. However, I am debating whether to combine my content with the talk show stuff, as about 80% of people I’ve asked on instagram want to be able to get all my content (behind the scenes on stories, my writing advice, my editing help, and talk show) in one place. What do you think?
Anyway, on with the talk show
