Environ[Mental]
Hello.
I have written a few posts over the last few weeks. One of them was not funny, nor fictional. In fact it was so serious I decided I’d run for Prime Minister instead of posting it here.
So you’ve got that to look forward to.
Meanwhile, here is a poem.
I found it a few minutes ago, and I wrote it precisely a year ago.
Environ[mental]
27062024
what extraordinary circumstances
to be the environment and the beast
to have only oneself to blame
this teen-aged species writhing
in a slither of morning light
which, like amber, pools in the corners and captures
the creature fighting
the hangover of its own
burgeoning consciousness
inside nests within nests
and wars within wars
amongst itself, outside itself
firing off spores to the stars
and hoping because it’s only just developed
the concept of hope
that it might hope for things forever
unknowing, naive, wearing the thing thin
slipping between buildings and flickering into windows
the animal cages itself
and blames its cousins for its misery
As always, your feedback is appreciated. I’ve made this post 100% free so you can all comment.
Trivia:
This poem is one of my favourites. I think it signifies a return to what I still think was one of my peaks as a writer, the year 2015.
I was at uni, had no worries in the world, and was able to totally obsess with writing increasingly weirder poetry. I will publish it all someday soon.
But will you read it?
(Note, I will only launch pre-orders when it’s done and WKTH is out. I don’t want another WKTH issue if life and health gets in the way)
Another poll, and this is a weird one. I want to introduce people to my poetry without having to charge them for it. This substack is great for that, but I want a wider reach. I am thinking a free chapbook of 10 poems might suffice.
Bonus features:
There are a handful of days left before the latest FREE FICTION FRIDAY shelves expire. Here they are in order of importance.
It might be a while before the next one as I have a secret project to work on.
Oh, and before I forget, I made some Lego bookends.
If you’re interested in the bookends, you can read about them here.
